Leonia ceremony honors memory of Pearl Harbor victims

It was a day that would live, as the president told Americans, “in infamy.” More than 2,400 lives were snuffed out in an attack that no one expected, an attack that came quite literally out of the blue. The president at the time, as Commander Richard Palka reminded a total of 18 people who gathered at American Legion Post 1 of Leonia to commemorate the occasion, was Franklin D. Roosevelt. The date was Dec. 7, 1941, a Sunday, and the attack was at the U.S. Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, on Oahu Island in Hawaii.
