Fort Lee Battle of the Bands provides a platform for Bergen County teen musicians

FORT LEE - This Friday, June 7 sees the 2013 installment of what has become a Bergen County tradition: the annual Fort Lee Battle of the High School Bands, to take place at the Jack Alter Fort Lee Community Center beginning at 7:00 p.m.

The contest, sponsored by the Fort Lee Film Commission, will be held on the Community Center's first-floor indoor stage, at 1355 Inwood Terrace in Fort Lee. The participating bands are all from the Bergen County area (see band lineup below), and include performers from area high schools.

Admission is free. Doors open at 6:45 p.m., and the performances begin at 7:00 p.m. The show will be MC'd by WFDU-FM DJ Christine Vitale.

The competition offers a prize of $500 to the first-place band, as selected by the judging panel, and a separate $250 Wendy's-sponsored Audience Choice Award.

Fort Lee Film Commission logo"This program is open to all high school bands from Bergen County", said Tom Meyers, Executive Director of the Fort Lee Film Commission. "Over the past decade, we have enabled many area high school rock musicians to perform before the public, which is a rare opportunity in this day and age. Though it's easy to throw your band's videos up on YouTube or Facebook, to perform before a live audience on stage is a rare treat and we are happy to provide these young musicians with this opportunity."

Meyers draws a parallel between the Film Commission's current competition, and the music shows held at the historic Palisades Amusement Park. "Over the years, many venues where young rockers could perform have closed down. One such venue was the legendary Palisades Amusement Park in Fort Lee / Cliffside Park. From 1898 through its closure in September of 1971, this was an entertainment Mecca. Palisades Amusement Park even had a Battle of the Bands. Out of this history, our Fort Lee Film Commission modern-day Battle of the High School Bands was born."

This year's participating bands include:
